Our Leather
Sourced from Tuscany
Tuscany, a region in central Italy, is well known for its unique tradition and prized knowledge of producing high quality leather. And that is why we source our vegetable tanned leather from a trusted tannery in Tuscany, to ensure the finest quality and authenticity. We use high-grade, vegetable tanned leather imported straight from one of the associated tanneries of Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale (Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather). The Consorzio safeguards, guarantees and preserves the vegetable tanned leather produced in Tuscany.

Tanned to Perfection
The tanning process is a remarkable progression using natural tannins extracted from trees. By means of modern technology, machineries, ancient recipes and the slow passing of time, tanning changes animal hide into tough, enduring, and chemically-stable leather. How the process is carried out determines the quality of the leather.
Vegetable tanning is an artisan tradition spanning centuries, as opposed to the relatively new chrome tanning process which uses chemicals and is commonly used for the mass production of leather goods. To this very day, vegetable tanning remains the most traditional – and the only method ever able to give leather its unique durable characteristics without compromising comfort and uniqueness. A craft that requires precision, skill and patience, the vegetable tanning process uses tannin, the core ingredient that transforms animal hide into a compact, durable and resilient material. The tannin extracts give vegetable tanned leather its distinct, distinguishable properties. And it is the rich colours of tannins that bequeath leather its warm, brilliant shade.

Natural and Environmentally Friendly
A natural method, vegetable tanned leather is ethical – no animal is killed for its skin. The raw hides used by Consorzio’s tanneries are by-products of food manufacturers that produce meat for human consumption. It does not contain toxic substances such as azo-dyes, nickel, PCP or chrome VI, and is safe for individuals with allergies to metal.
Vegetable tanned leather is environmentally friendly. Vegetable tanned leather goods and handicrafts can be discarded and degrade naturally due to its chemical-biological properties. Alternatively, waste recycling and depuration systems invested in by the Consorzio’s tanneries ensure that the environment remains sacred and respected.
